Dirty Little Secrets

We all have them. Sometimes we share them with one or two other people, but we're too embarrassed to let them become common knowledge. We all know what I'm talking about.

It's that playlist on your ipod.

Since I have no shame (and nothing else for a post), I thought that I would share mine with you.

  • Always on Your Side by Cheryl Crow and Sting - So far, so good. Nice tune, nice message, nice arrangement.
  • My Moon, My Man by Feist - You might be think it was overplayed on Verizon, commercials, but it's still a pretty sexy little song.
  • Holiday by Green Day - I saw them do this live and they caught the stage on fire. It was so cool. And who hates Green Day?
  • Disturbia by Rihanna - Okay, not feeling so proud of this one. I shouldn't even admit to knowing it, let alone owning it. But it's really catchy.
  • Jungle Love by The Steve Miller Band - Jungle Love in the surf and the pouring rain, everything's better when wet. Seriously, this is one jaunty song. You can't help but be energized listening to it.
  • Take a Chance on Me by Abba - I'm a closet Abba fan. Sue me.
  • I'm in Love with a Girl by Gavin Degraw - this song actually has the perfect tempo for me to run completely in step with.
  • Whenever, Wherever by Shakira - This song brings back really good memories for me. When we were on our honeymoon in Florence, we were walking hand in hand down the cobblestone streets together late one night and there was a performer singing this on the street.
  • The Remedy by Jason Mraz - This song was WAY overplayed when it came out, but it also is perfect to run by.
  • Harder to Breathe by Maroon 5 - Okay. I LOVE these guys. I have no idea why. Their music all has an edge, like they are perpetually coming off of a bad breakup. But the lead singer used to date Paris Hilton, so maybe he has good reason to have bad feelings about relationships.
  • Makes me Wonder by Maroon 5 - I really shouldn't like this song. When you break up with someone, no need to be a punk about it.
  • Toxic by Britney Spears - So...this doesn't look good at all.
  • Push by Matchbox 20 - I can say this without shame. They are awesome. Too bad Rob Thomas is so androgynous and emaciated looking all the time.
  • Where do you go? by No Mercy - courtesy of my Night at the Roxbury soundtrack. I love that movie.
  • Beautiful Life by Ace of Base - Well, because it Is.
  • Santa Maria (del Buen Ayre) by Gotan Project - It's a good cool down song. I like to pretend I'm a Latin dancer when I listen to it.
  • Emotion by Destiny's Child - I hate myself.

Maybe this was a bad idea. Admitting to Toxic was pretty rough for me. I mean, what if someone I actually know saw this post? My only defense is that this is my workout playlist, so everything is chosen in part by how well it can make me move. So what about you? Any dirty little secrets on your ipod? I know FTN listens to Nickelback, but I bet that's not the worst thing on his playlist....

Jungle Love is one of my all time favorites. It came out when I was in high school -- when I was a very, very bad girl -- when my nickname was Peaches.

Well, I hope that it's healing for you to get that off your chest, Therese. The first step is admitting you've got a problem. . .

I'VE GOT 4 POSTS THAT CONTAIN THE WORD "NICKELBACK"??? WHAT THE HELL???

Sorry. I just wasn't expecting that.

I should mention that "Holiday" by Green Day is my "perfect tempo to run with" song. At least for a few miles.

Hmm, I'm going to have to see what's on my mp3 player these days. There may be something weird, but I guarantee there's no "Toxic."

Fun list actually, I love to see what others enjoy. As for Abba? Sue me too, I'm not even hiding in the closet anymore :)

No Sinatra?

Nothing Michael W?

Abba? Hasn't been the same since it was on vinyl ....

In addition to a small handful of FTN covers, I also have Toxic. And Crazy - the single and dance mix versions, Hit Me Baby One More Time, and an Eminem/Britney mash-up. I also have Kung Fu Fighting and Strokin', which I always skip if out driving and it comes on when I'm at a stoplight. Even if the windows are closed.

I also have 2 Nickelback tracks on my iPod.

Peaches - I always liked how the actors danced whenever that song came on in Everybody Loves Raymond.

Desmond - Oh, I have a problem.

FTN - It's shocking isn't it? I'm sorry to put it out there for everyone to see, but you do have a Nickelback problem. I only tell you because I care.

Sailor - Abba fans unite!

Xavier - Um, who's Michael W?

FADKOG - Ah, yes. I knew you would be open-minded about it.

Eminem's bad for me. He makes me say bad things.

Michael W would be Michael W Smith, who was 'The Man' in 'contemporary Christian music' circles back in the 80s/90s. Nice home-schooled Catholic girl that you are, I wondered if you might have missed him. But in our house, we heard lots and LOTS of Michael W. . .

Ain't no shame in yo' game. I don't subscribe to the notion that it's necessary to be embarrassed by any musical selection. People who are pretentious in their musical tastes (like my friend Pete who listens to "college music" and hates it, but wants to seem cool to others, who do not even like college music) are missing out on the fun stuff. Like Toxic. (My first ever purchase on iTunes, way back on 3/14/2004, thank you very much! Along with The Darkness, "I Believe In A Thing Called Love".

It's all good.

Love Maroon 5! Harder to Breathe is one of my all-time favorites. I posted it on my pre-bomb blog. :)

Phyllis, sweetie... somehow I can totally believe that you were a very, very bad girl *and* that you were nicknamed Peaches. <3

OK, I decided to plug in my iPOD and just see exactly what all I put on it last time. Here's what I have.

"Pump it" by The Blackeyed Peas
"Cliffs of Dover" by Eric Johnson
"Cum on Feel the Noise" by Quiet Riot
"Rock you Like a Hurricane" by the Scorpions
"Here I go Again" by Whitesnake
"The Kill" by 30 Seconds to Mars

Then all of U2s "Achtung Baby" and Dream Theater's "Awake"

And then a bit of classical stuff.

Desmond - Ah, yes. I actually met him once and got his autograph, but because I didn't know who he was nor had I heard about his name once before meeting him, I threw it away.

Taja - Hurray for no shame!

Flutterby - I love that song too.

XH - Is that general listening music or is it for something particular, like working out? Cuz I should point out that this playlist is strictly for running to. My "just listening because I like it" playlist is significantly different.

I've never been a big fan of U2, even though our band has done a few covers of their songs. Sunday Bloody Sunday was fun on the violin, though...

Almost the only time I listen my iPOD is when I'm on my bike, so it is kind of an exercise thing. Except that I fill it up from my general music collection and don't make any sort of special considerations that I know of for this.

And you don't like U2? We can't be friends anymore. (Hating all the stuff they've produced in the last 10 years doesn't count, because we all do that.)

Therese in Heaven said...

My dear XH, I am too young to have heard any U2 songs on the radio proceeding the past ten. And after hearing "Beautiful Day" a million times when it came out, I didn't feel compelled to look into them further.

As another Abba fan, I stand up in pride, clench fist raised, and yell at the top of my lungs, "Solidarity, Sister!"

My dad had the Steve Miller Band album in vinyl that had the song "Jungle Love" (Book of Dreams), and I remember it well.

If you like Miller's "Jet Airliner", I would recommend you tracking down the original version by blues musician Paul Pena. It is pure joy.

As for U2, this is way before your time, but I would recommend Unforgettable Fire. To me this was their finest hour. They really didn't take on the mega-star status until the following album, The Joshua Tree, so it has a sign of maturity without the spoilage of success.
